Prep Baseball Report's IA Underclass Prospect Games event took place on Monday, August 1, 2016. The event was held at Duane Banks Field; on the campus of the University of Iowa. The event featured 2018, 2019 & select 2020 prospects from Iowa who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff. Thank you to the players, parents, my staff and the University of Iowa coaching staff.

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Underclass Prospect Games.

outfield Prospects

Zach Barden, OF/RHP, Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2020
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.28 runner. Square stance, long stride to contact, out front, flat bat path, gap to gap approach, ground ball contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Good direction with feet, fields cleanly, stops after release, minimal use of lower half and momentum to throw, low arm slot, elevated throws, avg. accuracy to target, 70 mph arm strength from outfield.

Chase Boeve, OF, Pocahontas, 2018
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 6.97 runner. Crouched stance, stays open in swing, out and around at contact, ground ball contact, 76 mph exit velocity. Quick feet/ good runner in outfield. Fields cleanly, low arm slot, sinking action on throws, varying accuracy, 75 mph arm strength.

Marshall Curnes, OF, Clarke, 2018
6-foot, 162-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.52 runner. Upright stance, closed off with front foot, slices through hitting zone, oppo approach, 72 mph exit velocity. Solid reads and direction in outfield. Fields cleanly, stops momentum to throw, avg. carry and accuracy to target, 74 mph arm strength.

Kyle Denison, RHP/OF, North Scott, 2018
6-foot-2, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Tall lean build. 7.22 runner. Pre-set hands and load, dives back shoulder in swing, out and around at contact, pull approach, heavy top spin contact, 74 mph exit velocity. Loose actions and moves well in outfield, longer arm action, low release effects carry, accurate to target, 80 mph arm strength from outfield. 

Kaden Dewey, OF, Waverly-Shell Rock, 2020
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Has strong tools for grad class. 7.32 runner. Balanced set-up, stays inside baseball at contact, loses posture/falls back at contact, flashes occasional hard contact, mid/pull approach, 89 mph exit velocity. Good footwork and fields cleanly, creates angles and direction on throws, short arm action with clean mechanics, solid carry and accuracy to target, 80 mph arm strength.

 

Josh Fitzgerald, OF, Mason City Newman, 2019
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 6.83 runner. Square stance, deeper load, creates good bat speed, leg kick trigger, dive bomb hitter, flashes well above avg. pop for age, mid/pull approach, 80 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork and glove in OF, stops to throw, longer arm action, above avg. carry and accuracy to target, 82 mph arm strength from outfield.

Andrew Fox, OF/RHP, Des Moines Christian, 2019
5-foot-8, 135-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.37 runner. Simple setup with easy load, balanced through swing, short to contact, good hand speed through zone, line drive and ground ball contact, 75 mph exit velocity. Solid direction on throws, avg./ok feet and glove, clean arm action, solid carry and accuracy to target, 80 mph arm strength from outfield.

Zach Hollingsworth, OF/RHP, Des Moines Lincoln, 2018
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.77 runner. Taller open stance, strides to square with front heel turn trigger, rotational lower half, flat plane through zone, consistent solid line drives, 80 mph exit velocity. Covers ground in OF, solid glove and feet, long extended arm action, avg. carry on throws, misses arm-side occasionally, 82 mph arm strength.

Landon Howard, LHP/OF, Gilbert, 2019
5-foot-7, 135-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.48 runner. Square stance, inconsistent stride, some dip in bat path, hands are short to ball, uses whole field, solid contact, 73 mph exit velocity. Active feet, fields on side of ball effecting direction to target, long projectable arm action, throws are online with accuracy, 80 mph arm strength.

Alex Kleider, OF, Sioux City East, 2019
5-foot-6, 145-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. 6.9 runner. Pre-set hands and load, short to the baseball, consistent solid contact, gap to gap, line drive approach, 79 mph exit velocity. Raw mechanically in outfield, fields off to side, strides open to throw, elevated throws to plate, 69 mph arm strength from outfield.

Sam Mattecheck, OF, Rock Island Alleman, 2019
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 6.72 runner. Square stance, short load, leg kick trigger, front hip opens early- bat drags occasionally, shows decent hands to the baseball, 80 mph exit velocity. Easy actions in outfield, works through baseball, slight hitch in arm action, accurate throws to target, 73 mph arm strength from outfield.

Britt Noel, OF, New London, 2018
5-foot-9, 155-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. 7.33 runner. Solid base and setup in box, easy swing, drops hands and drags bat through zone, out front at contact, mid/pull approach, 71 mph exit velocity. Decent athlete in OF, works through ball, cuts baseball on release effecting carry and accuracy, shows fast hand and some arm strength, 78 mph arm strength from outfield.

Cade Nolan, OF/LHP, Jesup, 2019
5-foot-8, 145-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.69 runner. Square stance, easy load, strides inline, clean line drive bat path, rotational lower half, pulls off baseball occasionally, mid/pull approach, 76 mph exit velocity. Aggressive in outfield, works through ball, short arm action, avg. carry and accuracy to target, 74 mph arm strength from outfield.

Blaise Rosson, OF, Burlington, 2018
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 6.9 runner. Square athletic stance, creates good bat speed, stays on and through contact, shows good hands at plate, line drive gap to gap approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Athletic actions in OF, plays through ball, stops to throw, short arm action, minor tweaks to throwing footwork and arm action- will make good improvements. 81 mph arm strength from outfield with solid carry and accuracy.

Nick Schmucker, OF, Cedar Rapids Xavier, 2019
5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.1 runner. Slight crouch in upper half, pre-set hands with easy body load, good direction through contact, short to contact, uses whole field well, consistent solid contact, 69 mph exit velocity. Shows good feet and glove in OF, plays through baseball, solid direction and routes, short guarded arm action, elevated throws to plate, avg. accuracy, 68 mph arm strength.

Jacob Swansen, OF, Johnston, 2019
5-foot-9, 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.35 runner. Pre-set hands, some rhythm, leg kick trigger, slight arm bar to swing, gap to gap approach, solid line drive and fly ball contact, 80 mph exit velocity. Moves through baseball, length to exchanges and release, avg. glove, above avg. carry and accuracy to throws, 79 mph arm strength from outfield.

Levi Usher, OF, Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Most athletic outfielder in event. Lean fast twitch build. 6.7 runner. Open stance, controlled leg kick trigger to square, strides inline, clean bat path, line drive approach, works mid/pull side of field, above avg. pop in bat, 86 mph exit velocity. Light on his feet, easy athletic actions in field, above avg. arm speed, good carry and accuracy to target. 87 mph arm strength.

Bryan Verdon, RHP/OF, Davenport North, 2019
5-foot-8, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.18 runner. Tall square stance, collapses into contact, slight uphill path, short finish, flashes pull pop in bat, 84 mph exit velocity. Shows good feet and glove in field, plays through ball, need better throwing footwork, solid carry and accuracy to target, 80 mph arm strength from outfield.

Chase Wertzberger, OF, Cedar Rapids Xavier, 2018
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.4 runner. Square stance, choppy rhythm to load, strides inline to pitcher, rolls hands early through contact, line drive and ground ball contact, works middle of field, 77 mph exit velocity. Solid feet and glove in outfield, stiff pie arm action, throws from low ¾ slot, elevated to plate, 70 mph arm strength.

Everett Willson, OF, Burlington, 2018
6-foot, 176-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 6.87 runner. Lean athletic build with present strength. Crouched with upper half, slightly open-strides to slightly across body, locks off swing, stiff path through zone, occasional pop in bat to gaps, 81 mph exit velocity. Raw mechanically, low arm slot, fields with 2 hands occasionally, needs improved footwork, is athletic enough- should improve with instruction, 74 mph arm strength.
