SARASOTA-- In a hard fought game that came down to pitching and defense, Venice was able to come away with the 2-1 win over Killian. Starting pitcher and 2015 LHP Kade Hunkapiller threw 4 1/3 innings and gave up one earned run for Venice and 2015 3B/RHP and Stetson Signee Joey Gonzalez threw 5 innings and gave up two unearned runs for Killian. 2017 RHP/INF Colin Christello also made a big impact for Venice as he threw the last 2 2/3 innings and gave up no runs and was also 2-2 with a walk at the plate.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Killian drove in a run off the bat of 2015 1B/RHP and FAMU Signee Keith Stevens who roped a singled to center to give the Cougars a 1-0. However, Venice responded in the bottom of the fifth when 2015 OF Langston Provitt brought in a run on a sacrifice bunt and throwing error that allowed the runner to score for second and Provitt to reach second himself. Then a wild pitch that let Provitt to reach third and sacrifice fly from 2016 INF/OF Tyler Gardner gave the Indians the 2-1 lead which was enough for Christello to seal the victory for the Indians and send them to the championship of the Sarasota Baseball Classic.
