Gainesville, Fl --- As we continue to look at the top prospects from the Florida Underclass Games from each class, today we look at the class of 2018. A very impressive group of young talent that will start to attract attention from the college coaches very soon, lead by RHP/SS Matthew Dickey from North Florida Christian. A very polished young arm that already gets it up to 87 mph with good secondary stuff. Followed by the very athletic and projectable RHP/OF Tyler Olah from Chiles HS. He showed a little pop in BP with athletic OF actions and was up to 86 mph off the mound with a loose live arm. High ceiling kid. RHP Andrew Aultman was also a high ceiling kid with a loose live arm and an athletic projectable body. He got it up to 88 mph. Here’s a look at the best of 2018.
Matthew Dickey, RHP/SS, North Florida Christian 2018
6-foot, 165 pound right hander with an athletic physical body for being so young. Fluid delivery with a loose live very quick arm at a high ¾ slot. He landed slightly across his body but was consistently out front and repeated his delivery. The fast ball was 84-87 mph with good downward tilt. The curve ball had very good ¾ rotation and flashed ML average. Showed good feel for spinning the ball. The change up was 75-77 mph with good arm speed. It occasionally cut when thrown glove side of the plate. Showed good presence on the mound with good rhythm in delivery. Was a strike thrower. Good composure for such a young guy. Was the best all around pitcher in the showcase. Showed good stuff with pitchabilty and a lot of upside. The D-1 college coaches will be calling very soon.
Very physical for his age. Showed athletic infield actions with solid hands with a solid average ML arm. Release is a bit slow. Winds up to throw. Ball jumps out of his hand. Infield velocity was 82 mph. Erect stance at the plate with a quiet approach. Short soft stride with quickness and strength in the bat already. Shows pull power now. Some length and lift in swing. More power will come. Good balanced finish. 87 mph exit bat speed velocity. Showed very well on the mound. The best overall pitcher at the event.
Tyler Olah, RHP/OF, Chiles HS, 2018
6-foot-3, 170 pound right hander with a tall lean athletic projectable body. He has a loose live quick arm with a fluid delivery and good rhythm. His fastball is 84-86 mph with downhill tilt. He takes the ball out to 1B and lands in line. Gets good extension out front. His curve ball is 68-69 mph with a big loopy downward rotation. The change up is 75- 77 mph with good arm speed. He was around the plate with all three pitches. He has a very high ceiling as his body, athleticism and arm action all project out. His stuff will improve with physical maturity and when he physically begins to develop, the colleges will be calling. It will be fun to watch when that starts happening.
Athletic actions in the outfield with a loose live easy arm with carry on throws. Good coordination with good routes. Charges through ball when fielding. Showed some pop in his bat with loose quick hands. Had some lift and length in his swing. Will have some future power. Had 88 mph exit bat speed velocity. Very athletic kid with a lot of upside. Also shined on the mound.
Andrew Aultman, RHP, Graceville HS, 2018
6-foot-2, 175 pound right hander with a tall loose lean athletic projectable guy with a loose live arm at a high ¾ slot. He’s got a bit of a slinger type arm action, meaning he opens a bit early in back and works under the ball, but he is consistent out front. He’s a little deep in back and lands slightly across his body. Has good arm speed with projection. The fast ball was 84-88 mph with some late tail action and downhill tilt when he gets out front. The curve ball was 71-73 mph with ¾ rotation. Occasionally gets around it, but should tighten up with added velocity. The change up was 76-77 mph with good arm speed and same fast ball action. Threw a lot of strikes with all three pitches. Very young, very athletic and a very projectable arm. He should start to attract attention from some colleges very soon.
Matthew Boynton, RHP/C, Maclay HS, 2018
6 foot 149 pounds with a long, lean, athletic, and projectable frame. Loose live easy working arm at a high ¾ arm slot. Big arm circle in back with a high front side. Fluid delivery. Fast ball is crisp at 82-84 mph. Curve ball has tight ¾ rotation with occasional depth. Occasionally gets around it but very good rotation. Change up is a bit too hard but has good arm speed and good feel at 75-76 mph. A very good arm with a high ceiling. A lot of upside.
Had a short quick catchers arm with good arm strength and carry for his age. Throws were on line and around the bag. 2.06 pop time, 77 mph catchers velocity. Wide stance with good approach. Loose bat with some length and lift in bat path. Has some quickness in the hands. Power will come with physical maturity. Some pull power now. 79 mph exit bat speed velocity.
Dalton Childs, C, Pace HS, 2018
6-foot, 190 pound catcher with a thick stocky strong lower half. Has a quick exchange with quick feet and hands. Light on his feet for big guy with good body control. Some carry in arm and mostly around the bag. 1.99 pop time with a catchers velocity of 75 mph. Good load, some separation with a slight toe tap and long stride at the plate. Aggressive approach. Good level line drive bat path. Some looseness in hands with some pull power. Good young catcher.
Raymond Fields, OF/1B, The First Academy, 2018
6-foot-2, 175 pound outfielder with a loose lean athletic projectable body. Showed athletic actions in the outfield with good hands. Aggressive routes fielding through the ball with a good release. Long strider. Showed a loose bat with some quickness in his hands. Swing had some length with some lift. Bat will continue to improve with physical maturity. Body has a lot of upside. Had an 83 mph outfield velocity. Throws had carry.
John Turner, OF/LHP, Indian Rocks Christian, 2018
5-foot-10, 150 pound outfielder/pitcher with a loose athletic young projectable body. Good actions in outfield with a quick release. Charges ball and follows throw in his finish. Has a loose arm with some carry. Had an outfield velocity of 81 mph. Had a loose bat with a line drive type stroke. Good load and separation. Gap to gap type approach. Could stay inside ball well. Lacks strength. Overall game will improve with physical maturity.
