To continue our in depth look at the Florida Underclass Games from last week, today we will focus on 2017 RHP Drew Martin who attends Jesuit HS in Tampa.
At 6-foot-7 230 pounds, Martin has an extra-large frame and quite the presence when he stands on the mound. He has a simple, repeatable delivery that allows him to pound the strike zone with both his fastball and breaking ball. Although Drew did not show a changeup during the game, I have seen him throw it for strikes with decent action in the past. As far as mechanics, the main area where he can improve is lengthening out his arm action. Right now he throws from around his ear, whereas if he lengthened out his arm action and got on top of the ball more, he would likely increase his velocity and give hitters a more difficult angle as his fastball would be heading on a downward plane.
Overall, Drew seems to be heading in the right direction with mechanics and increasing velocity. Earlier this spring I saw him at 81-83 and touching 84 mph, while at the Florida Underclass Games he was sitting 83-85 and touching 86 mph. Martin’s pitchability and size will attract many scouts if he has not attracted them already. Drew will be one of the top three arms for a talented Jesuit squad this upcoming spring and will look to continue to improve. Martin’s combination of grades (3.75 GPA), talent, and projectability should allow him to sign with a division I school next year.
