History of the event:
The concept of the Tournament of Champions started in 2007 as a conversation between several high school coaches at the state coaches convention. At that time, the head coach of Eagle's View Academy, Gil Morales (1A FHSAA champion), met with the coaches of several other state championship teams, and invited them to Jacksonville for the event. In the first year of the event, six FHSAA state champions accepted the invite. Filling those rosters were numerous Division 1 and professional prospects. Casey Kelly, Sarasota High School, became the first participant to make it to the Major Leagues with Boston. To separate the event from the average high school tournament experience, the Tournament of Champions partnered with the city of Jacksonville and local universities to host the majority, if not all of the games at college or pro facilities.
To date, the Tournament of Champions remains one of the top high school events in the state of Florida and the South Eastern region of the country. This invitee only event draws the attention of MLB scouts and is a highly anticipated opportunity for coaches of competitive programs. Prep Baseball Report Florida looks forward to continuing the partnership with the Tournament of Champions and looks to establish relationships around the state to continue to be the authoritative voice of high school baseball.
