Underclass Invitational: Corners Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s Underclass Invitational Showcase class took place on Sunday January 25th at the Slammers South Baseball Facility in Englewood, Colorado. 50 prospects showed up and strutted their stuff in a pro-style workout. Over the next several days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position-by-position rankings of the event, culminating with the Top Ten Overall Prospects from the showcase.

Many players at the Underclass Invitational are multi-positional. Prep Baseball Report broke down these players using projectability for playing positions over the next 2+ years.
Ashton Mansur from Columbine High School lead all corners in arm velocity at 73 mph across the diamond, while Legend's Donovin Martinez took the top spot with an 82 mph exit velocity.
Let’s take a look at the Top Corner Prospects from this January’s Underclass Invitational.
Top Corner prospects (Listed alphabetically)
Donovin Martinez MIF/3B, Legend, 2017
6-foot-1, 180-pound, left-handed hitting middle infielder and third base. Defensively, has a good frame for third base, throwing 69 mph across the diamond from short, over the top arm action with accuracy. Good feet from his middle infield experience put him in great position at third base as well. Hits from slightly crouched stance, strong load with slight bat wrap. Strong lower half drive through the ball and good extension during contact. Shows fast bat speed with a good approach hitting line drives up the middle producing 82 mph exit velocity. Ran a 4.97 home to first.
Ashton Masur, 3B/RHP, Columbine , 2017
6-foot-1, 220-pound right-handed third baseman/right-handed pitcher. Defensively, has a good frame for third base, throwing 78 mph across the diamond from 3rd, over the top arm action with accuracy. On the mound, utilizes a strong lower half, high ¾ arm slot. Max effort to the plate produces FB from 76-79. Slows arm a bit on 66-67 mph breaking ball with 12/6 shape that was also thrown for strikes. Hits from a tall, narrow stance, hands wrap back, utilizes a short stride to get lower half through the zone. Quick hands produce good power to the left side and an exit velocity of 78. Very strong looking player. Ran a 5.1 home to first.
Mathew Turner, 1B, Broomfield, 2017
6-foot-4, 155-pound right-handed hitting first baseman. Defensively at first base, threw 69 mph across the diamond with accuracy from short, high ¾ arm action. He would add more velocity if he closes is front side down as he tends to open up front hip before he throws. Hits from a balanced setup, with a short stride. His hands are positioned at the top of the hitting zone with minimal load. He has a short path to the ball with extension that produces line drives at 79 mph exit velocity. Has some good power potential as he continues to grow into his frame. Ran a 4.47 home to first.
Luke Ziegler, 3b/RHP, Valor Christian, 2018
6-foot-1, 165-pound, third base and right-handed pitcher. Well put together and athletic. Defensively, he shows good feet and a quick arm produced 66 mph velocity across the diamond. As he grows his arm will get more whip which will increase velocity in the field. At the plate he hits from a straight balanced upright stance, gets his front foot down early with a long stride. Hits against a firm front side with nice lower leg drive through the zone. Exit velocity was 81 mph at the invitational and showed good plate coverage.
