Adams State Fall Tournament: Offense Analysis

By John Cackowski
Director of Scouting

This past weekend the Fall Prospect Program participated in the Adams State Fall Tournament. The tournament was a great opportunity for Adams State head coach James Capra and his assistants to see players in our state, while also showing potential future players their great facilities. Under coach Capra, Adams State started their Division 2 baseball program 3 years ago, and has made competitive strides playing in the tough RMAC conference. They have an impressive All-Turf Baseball Field with upgraded weight and practice facilities.

Offense analysis of the past weekend  (listed in alphabetical Order)

2015's

Marc Alva, OF, Columbine, 2015
5-foot-8, 155-pound left-handed hitting RHP/OF. Hits from a balanced stance, hands load back smoothly. Swing produces explosive bat speed with a bat path that is level with good extension through the zone. Has gap to gap line drive power that produces 87 mph exit velocity. Gets in trouble when he wants to lift ball. When he stays square through the ball he produces very hard line drives. Defensively charges ball aggressively in the outfield and we have seen him throw 78 mph. Alva went 2 for 6 on the weekend. Both hits were hit very hard to right field. We have had his 60 time at 6.94.

Doug Case, 3B, Dakota Ridge, 2015
6-0, 195-pound right-handed hitting third baseman is currently uncommitted. Case stands tall with a balanced stance, hands load back smoothly and has a short stride, and strong lower half creating a short, uphill bat path with good extension and above average 83 mph exit velocity. Case shows gap to gap power and is tough out at the plate.  Defensively, has a good frame for third base, throwing 83 mph across the diamond from short, over the top arm action with accuracy. In game one Case made a great play cutting off the ball and started a 5-2-1 double play with the bases loaded. On the weekend Case was 2 for 7 with a double of the wall against Adam's State's Varsity squad.

John Mallon,1B, Highlands Ranch, 2015
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting first baseman has an strong athletic, and projectable frame.  Hits from a tall, open setup, hands load back smoothly, utilizes a short stride that he closes down before ball enters hitting zone.  Swing is fast through the zone producing uphill bat path spraying line drives from gap-to-gap producing 85 mph exit velocity off the tee. Mallon had a fantastic weekend going 4-9 showing power with two doubles, one which almost went out at the big Adams State Field. On the last day one of his doubles was off the Adams State Varsity team.  Defensively, has a plus frame for first base and shows soft hands with ability to pick balls out of dirt. We have had Mallon at 77 mph across the diamond from first to third.  And we have seen him run a 7.41 60 and a 4.81 home to first.

Tyler Moore, 1B, Horizon, 2015
6-foot 155 pound left handed hitting first baseman dominated in the game we saw him. Off three different pitchers he continued to hit hard line drives up the middle and almost hit one out in last at-bat at the spacious Adams State Baseball field. For Horizon, Moore hit over .400 last season. He's a good athlete, also plays basketball for Horizon.

Thomas Sautel, SS, Dakota Ridge, 2015
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop has impressed all fall with strong build and good approach at plate. Defensively, we have had him at 77 mph across the diamond from short, showcasing good hands and accuracy while playing through the baseball. Consistently shows the ability to range in hole and use quick hands to throw runners out Hits from a tall stance with minimal load, producing short uphill bat path with extension and 89 mph exit velocity off tee. Ball jumps off bat with gap to gap power with carry. Sautel had another great weekend of hitting going 5 for 9 on the weekend. Sautel is always going hard.

2016's

Tyler Carrasco C Dakota Ridge High School 2016
5-foot-9 155-pound light on his feet athletic catcher.  Soft hands allow him to set up on the edges of the zone and frame pitches with minimal effort.  We like how Carrasco controls the game behind the plate. He is not afraid to call the inside pitch or back pick to 2nd.  At the plate he stands with a slightly open stance but comes to straight balance on his load. Carrasco hit well this weekend overall going 2-6 with a solid double in the left field gap in the first game.

Jared Chick, MIF, Roosevelt High School, 2016
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting MIF, hits from a tall setup with a short stride stride combined with a leg kick, hands move back during load producing 75 mph exit velocity off the tee. Has a good approach at the plate with a level swing producing gap to gap power. Defensively, threw 75 mph across the diamond with some accuracy from short, high arm slot. Showcased soft hands and played through the baseball. Ran  a impressive 6.90 60, and was 4.25 from home to first. We have had Jared at a 6.8 60 before. 2016 grad to follow. Kinda of a sleeper in our state coming from small town Johnstown. Had an outstanding weekend at the Adams State Tourney getting multiple hits in the gaps off mid 80's pitching, and made some spectacular plays at 2nd. 2016 grad to follow.

Ryan Faircloth, OF, Dakota Ridge High School, 2016
5-foot-10, 150-pound athletic outfielder has an outfield velocity of 78 mph, but we have seen him throw 81 from the position before. Throws from a long ¾ slinging arm slot with some accuracy.  Hits from an athletic slightly closed setup, load is minimal with hands already back with a good approach up the middle of the field. Showed good bat speed with a short level bat path produced several line drives from gap-to-gap with 81 mph exit velocity. During the tournament he impressed with his aggressive base running showing the ability to steal bases and also hit a triple. Had a great weekend hitting going 4 for 8 with a ball hit of the fence for a double. We have seen him run a 7.1 before. Had a 4.38 home to first time.

Thomas Nagel, 3B/RHP, Dakota Ridge, 2016
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting third baseman/right-handed pitcher with lanky, athletic, projectable frame.  Hits from a tall, balance set-up, hands wrap back, utilizes a short stride with leg kick. Produces an inside out swing with gap-gap power. Shows good bat speed that produces 79 mph exit velocity.  Defensively, has a good frame for third base, and we have had him throwing 80 mph across the diamond from short, over the top arm action with accuracy. On the mound, utilizes long, loose, high ¾ arm slot.  Nagel was a force at the plate all weekend. In the first game he hit a double, and Nagel used his 6.75 60 speed to collect a triple on a ball ripped down the right field line. In the 3rd game Nagel continued showing power hitting another double to the gap against Adams State's Varsity squad.

Marcelo Sanchez, 3B/RHP, Lakewood, 2016
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitting third baseman/right-handed pitcher with strong athletic build. Hits from a fluid balanced stance, has a quiet load and utilizes a short stride with a toe tap. Shows fast bat speed with a good approach hitting line drives up the middle producing 82 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively, has a good frame for third base, and we have had him throwing 74 mph across the diamond from short, over the top arm action with accuracy.  Sanchez had a great weekend at the plate going 5 for 8 with a double of mid 80's pitching. Solid looking 2016 prospect.

Ben Schecter, MIF/OF, Lakewood, 2016
5-foot-10, 140-pound is an athletic outfielder/shortstop. Throws from a long slinging arm slot with some accuracy. In the infield, we have had him at  77 mph across the diamond from a short arm action, impressing with average hands and clean exchanges playing through the baseball. From the outfield with same arm action he also throws 77. Hits from an slightly open setup, loading hands back smoothly with a good approach up the middle of the field. Level bat path produced several line drives from gap-to-gap with 78 mph exit velocity. During the tournament went 2 for 5 off mid 80's pitching and had a 4.20  home to first time. Versatile baseball player that we have seen have a lot of quality at-bats during the fall.

Trevor Wilson, 1B, Lakewood High School, 2016
6-foot-1, 215-pound right-handed hitting first baseman hits from a closed, balanced setup, and dives out with his stride. His hands are positioned low and loads in an upward path. He has a short path to the ball with extension that produces line drives at 85 mph exit velocity that allows him to hit well to the gaps, but swing tends to favor right field. Has some good power potential. We love Wilson's hustle. Trevor is also a a very good student who has a 4.8 weighted GPA and is ranked 3rd out of 503 in his class at Lakewood.

2017/2018's

Carter Bell C/OF Dakota Ridge High School 2017
5-foot-6, 115-pound catcher who plays bigger than his size.  Bell does a nice job of handling pitchers of all styles and displays good movement both left and right.  At this event, he collected pop times of 2.25 and 2.28. At the plate, a balanced 60/40 stance produces good power.  Bell lives in the middle of the field and has a short controlled swing with quick hands through the zone. With the runners on 2nd and 3rd off lower 80's pitching Bell battled and did a great job hitting the ball to the right side to get the run in.

James Kester, INF/P, Regis Jesuit, 2017
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting MIF/RHP hit from a balanced tall setup with a leg kick producing a short swing and an impressive 87 mph exit velocity. We have seen Kester throw  77 to 78 mph across the diamond from shortstop from a loose, high arm slot, with accuracy, which was higher than the 76 we saw him throw at the Colorado Top Propsect Games. Kester has potential presence at the plate, and already has some good size for a 2017 prospect. Kester went 2 for 6 on the weekend with two hard hits with one going for a triple.

Jordan Medina P/C/INF Highlands Ranch High School 2018
5-foot-10, 165-pound Catcher/RHP/Inf.  Medina has a strong arm for his age that provides 2.10 pop times at the dish.  Hitting from a slightly open stance, he is able to drive the ball well gap to gap.  Power down the lines will come as he grows in the next 4 years. One the weekend showed good bat speed at the plate and went 1 for 3 against mid 80's pitching

Mechanically, showed some rhythm to delivery, with level shoulders, toe pointed down at balance point, with squared level shoulders, and in-line towards home plate landing, and is working on falling off to first base since the last time we saw him.

Jake Starkey, MIF/OF, Dakota Ridge, 2017
5-foot-6, 125-pound second baseman with above average range on balls up the middle, posses a very accurate arm to first base. Throws over the top with a short quick are, infield velocity was 73 mph last time we had him on gun. He possesses soft hands on ground balls and has a great field presence. He also shows versatility being able to play left or right field. At the plate his 74 mph exit velocity produces good pop off the bat. He is a balanced hitter with a short stride which allows his hands to be quick to the ball, he has good bat control and hits well to both gaps. Starkey keeps it simple at the plate, and he has shown ability to handle low to mid 80's velocity with gap to gap line drive potential. Starkey went 2 for 2 for the weekend showing the ability to handle mid 80's pitching. Projects as a solid varsity starter.
